How can we help?

Answers to the questions we hear most.

🚀 Getting started

How do I take my first snip?

After launching Text Snip, it sits in your system tray (look for the blue clipboard icon). Press Ctrl + Shift + X anywhere — the screen dims. Drag a rectangle around the text you want, release, and the recognized text is on your clipboard. Paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V.

Where did the app window go?

Text Snip lives in the system tray so it's always one shortcut away. Click the tray icon (or right-click → Show window) to bring the window back. To exit completely, right-click the tray icon and choose Quit.

How many free snips do I get?

Without an account you get 10 free snips to try the app. Create a free account (email or Google) and snips become unlimited. Premium is only needed for the advanced toolkit — translation, smart extraction, tables and clipboard history.

Can I change the keyboard shortcut?

The capture shortcut is currently fixed to Ctrl + Shift + X to avoid conflicts with common apps. Configurable shortcuts are on our roadmap.

👤 Account & Premium

How do I create an account?

In the app, click the account icon in the title bar and sign up with your email and a password — or click Continue with Google for one-click sign-in. You can also sign in on this website from the Login page.

How do I redeem a promo code?

Two ways: in the app, open the account page and use the Have a promo code? field. Or sign in on this website and redeem it from your account. A valid code unlocks Premium instantly — each code works once.

What exactly does Premium unlock?

Instant translation of captured text, smart extraction of emails & links, table extraction to spreadsheets, manual OCR language selection, and clipboard history. Premium is a 1-year license — see Pricing.

Is the AI feature free?

Yes. Ask AI is free for everyone. It opens ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini in your browser with the captured text pre-filled — ready to summarize, fix grammar or explain. Text Snip doesn't run its own AI model, so there's no API key and no extra cost; you use your own assistant.

Does Premium expire?

Yes — Premium is a 1-year license. Your account page shows the exact date it's active until. When it lapses, your account automatically returns to the free plan (you keep unlimited snips), and you can renew or redeem a new code anytime. There's no recurring charge and nothing to cancel.

I forgot my password.

On the Login page, type your email and click Forgot your password? — we'll email you a secure link to set a new one. The same link works from the app's sign-in screen.

🔧 Troubleshooting

The shortcut doesn't do anything.

First check the tray icon — right-click it and make sure Toggle enabled is checked. If another app has claimed the same shortcut, close that app or change its binding. Note: if the window in focus runs as administrator, Windows may block the hotkey — run Text Snip as administrator too in that case.

The recognized text is wrong or empty.

OCR accuracy depends on the source. Try zooming the source content before snipping, select a slightly larger region, and make sure the language of the text is installed in Windows under Settings → Time & language → Language & region. Decorative fonts and low-contrast text are the hardest cases.

"Clipboard busy — try again."

Another program briefly locked the Windows clipboard (clipboard managers, remote desktop and some browsers do this). Snip again — Text Snip already retries automatically. If it keeps happening, try closing your clipboard manager.

The capture text didn't translate.

Translation is a Premium feature and needs an internet connection. Check that Translate captured text is enabled in Settings → AI enhancements, and that your target language is set. If the translation service is unreachable, the original text is copied instead so your snip is never lost.

How do I make Text Snip start with Windows?

Open Settings inside the app and enable Run on startup. The app starts minimized to the tray, ready for the shortcut.

🔒 Privacy & data

Do my screenshots get uploaded?

No. Text recognition runs locally on your machine, using the OCR engine built into Windows. The only time captured text leaves your computer is when you turn on an online feature (like translation) — and only that text, never the image. Read more in our Privacy Policy.

What data is stored about me?

If you create an account: your email, optional name/avatar (from Google sign-in) and your plan status. Your snips, settings and clipboard history stay on your device.

How do I delete my account?

Email us at accounts@blackflag.studio from your account's email address and we'll delete your account and its data.
